THE IRAQI MEDIA LANGUAGE DURING THE GULF WAR

Auther : By: Sa’id Al-Oraibi Al-Harthi

During the Second Gulf War, while the military battles and operations were taking place, the media campaign was no less vivid and serious. The information arena was generously opened for everybody. Each party used his own private media language, which expressed his interests.

This study aims to disclose the terms of the media language used by the Iraqi media and its principles and the method by which it managed the crisis.

The findings of the study has disclosed the concepts which the Iraqi Media used to frequently repeat so as to influence the Arab and Muslim public in order to gain their support. These media slogans included with different rates terms like treason, corruption, Arab union, distribution of fortune, Islamic Jihad, protection of the Islamic Holy land and shrines and the Islamic front.

Also, the Iraqi Media addressed six justifications for invading Kuwait ( Kuwait is a part of the Iraqi territories, Kuwaiti leaders conspired with Zionism and America against Iraqi people, achievement of the Arab union, solution of the Palestinian problem, fair distribution of the Arab fortune and that the decision for invading Kuwait has been a divine will, not a presidential one). These justifications were also addressed in different frequentation.

The study clarified that the Iraqi Media had been very keen to convince the people that Kuwait has ever been a part of its land and at the same time, it worked to bring about bad attributed and qualities to the Kuwaiti leaders. While on the other hand tried to draw a perfect image of Iraq by addressing terms such as: shield of the nation, mother Iraq, conscience and honour of the Arab nation, owner of Jihad march, rescuer of the Arabs from weakness and corruption, dear Iraq, people of Qadisyia and the candle of rightfulness.

The study has also made it clear that the Iraqi media classified the Arab countries on the basis of their standpoint from the invasion of Kuwait regardless of which party is rightful and without any consideration to the legitimacy of the invasion. Therefore, the Iraqi media made a good image of the supporting countries and vice versa.

The study discussed the media speech used against the USA and the Western countries that supported Kuwait against Iraq, where it aimed to make a public image to the essence that these countries have malicious ambitions and support Israel and stand against Iraq as a state, and they are against Islam and Arab union. The target is to form a public opinion to oppose the existence of the forces of these countries in the region and to gain the support of the conservative people in the Arab and the Islamic Worlds.
