MOSQUES SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION PATTERN IN A CONTEMPORARY ISLAMIC CITY: DAMMAM - SAUDI ARABIA

Auther : By: Dr. Ahmed J. Al-Jarallah and Dr. Fahad N. Al-Harigi

Until Recently the mosque was the land mark and the centre of all social activities in the Islamic City. Unfortunately the Islamic City lost this unique characteristic due to the rapid growth.

This paper examines the spatial distribution of mosques in Dammam. It concentrates, in particular, on service distance, hierarchy and population served by mosques.

Findings show that mosques are not equally distributed in the city and there is clear variation in service distances and population served by mosque, which necessitate developing suitable planning standards.
