BOTTLED WATER PRODUCTION IN SAUDI ARABIA: A STUDY IN GEOGRAPHY OF MANUFACTGURING

Auther : By: Abdulah S. Al Hudithi

This is an analytical study of the characteristics of the Saudi bottled water factories and consumer reaction. The adopted methodology of this study involves primary and secondary data collected from governmental and private sector statistics along with questionnaires presented to factory owners and consumers. Qualitative as well as quantitative statistical methods are used in establishing the final results of this research. It is concluded that:

Through the last two decades, eighteen Saudi bottled water factories were established. This production in1992 in small and large size bottled water was 650 million liter.

  1. Factories are distributed in most administrative regions, but concentrated largely in Riyadh. Geographical water deposits and access to consumer market are considered main distribution factors.
  2. Freight and transportation problems hinder marketing process.

Dense population areas consume most of the production. Even though Saudi Arabia imports limited amounts of bottled water still it exports some of its production to GCC countries.

No competition between local and imported bottled water production but specified patterns carefully observed to meet the local consumers’ preferences such as health, taste and water purity factors.
