THE DUTCH AND BRITISH EASTERN INDIAN COMPANIES COMPETITION IN BANDAR ABBAS FROM 1623 – 1645

Auther : By: DR. Mohamed H. Al-Aidarosi

The study demonstrates the following points:

  • Dutch incentives towards dominating the eastern seas and the Arabian Gulf area.
  • The emergence of the commercial bourgeoisie classes due to the economic boom and prosperity.
  • The development of the capitalist monopolistic establishments in Holland before any other European country.
  • Spaniard harassment and Portuguese raising prices of commercial commodities are other reasons which obliged the Dutch to concentrate their activities in the East.

The study, inter alia, exhibits the British exploration in the East, the Anglo-Dutch cooperation in the Arabian Gulf, then their hostility because of the great privileges obtained by the Dutch company from the Shah of Iran.

  • The British concern and resistance over the escalating influence the Dutch achieved.

One of the items the study reveals is the techniques the Dutch adopted in competing the British and focusing their commercial efficacies in Persia in general and in Bandar Abbas in particular. The Dutch did their best to exclude the British, stamp out their competition and exempt their influence utterly from Bandar Abbas.

The researcher demonstrates some of the techniques implemented by the Dutch to eliminate the British influence in Bandar Abbas and how they de-generated it to the extent that the British were forced to transfer their activities to Al-Basra. Thus the Dutch dominated commerce not only in Persia but also in the Arabia Gulf inflicting great damage on the British.
