THE EFFECT OF THE OIL FLUCTUATIONS ON THE PRIVATE SECTOR BEHAVIOUR IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA IN THE PERIOD 1974 – 1990 ....AN ECONOMETRIC STUDY

Auther : By: Dr. Ali Othman Al-Hakmi

The aim of this study is to examine empirically the effect of the oil market fluctuations on the private sector behaviour in the Saudi Arabia in the period 1974 – 1990. The study period has been divided into: the boom period (1974 – 1982) and the after boom period (1983 – 1990).

The study is divided into four sections: The growth trend and the structural changes of the private expenditure (consumption and investment) are examined in the first section. Section two presents econometric models for estimating statistically the effect of the oil market changes on the private expenditure functions in Saudi Arabia while section three summarizes the main findings.

The statistical results show that there has been a major change in the private sector share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the years 1983 – 1990 where the highest growth rates have been obtained in the boom period. The regression results also show that there is a significant change in the private expenditure behavior in the after boom period compared to the boom period.
