THE ANALYSIS OF JOURNALS ON THE TREATMENT OF CRIME PHENOMENON IN THE KUWAITI SOCIETY: AN ANALYTIC AND SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY

Auther : By: Dr. Khalid Al-Shallal

Within the framework of the scientific discussion of the general social circumstances, issues and problems from the sociological point of view, this study expresses the need for social pathology and for an attempt at forecasting outcomes in order to understand the causes and results as well as the required remedies for these phenomena, which threaten the survival of contemporary societies.

By undertaking a content analysis of an industrial week, which consists of 168 days temporally, spreading over a period of “one year before the invasion of Kuwait and one year after liberation” in three Kuwaiti newspapers, Al-Watan, Al-Anba and Al-Seyassah.

This study came up with three findings: That the media in our present day can distort the social set-up as it actually exists, thus inducing a false group consciousness of the facts of life that in the pursuit of profit, the media may neglect their social responsibility and their role as an instrument of social control. It was also found that reliance by the press on official sources in covering the news of crimes, makes such coverage sound passive, prevents the press from achieving a holistic perspective and from inter-reacting with social reality with all its conflicting aspects. Another finding was that historical events do have direct and indirect effects on the social, political, economic and cultural fabric of any society and that cultural conflicts eventually lead to the violation of laws unless the sub-cultures conflicts with the general cultural trend.

The results of this study underline the special nature of the communication institution in the State of Kuwait, particularly with regard to its keenness, despite the prevailing liberal environment, upon supporting the existing order and the power of the law in standing up against those who break the law.

This study opens the door for the undertaking of scientific studies on the social and other effects of the express, general and transient communication within our Arab society which has just crossed the threshold into the global culture without being armed with contemporary technology, and while it is being torn apart by numerous cultural trends posed to threaten its cultural identity. The study raises the question of the need for in-depth research into the elements of social change and its effect on social phenomena and the media which re-produces social consciousness in forms that are different from their symbol world.
