Auther : By: Dr. Ibrahim M. Al-Obeidy

The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences between the nuclear and extended families regarding their socio-economic and demographic characteristics. This study is based on a filed research carried out by Al-Riyadh Development Authority during the year 1987. The sample consisted of 2750 Saudi families in the city of Riyadh. The subjects were randomly selected and interviewed.

The finding of this study indicates that nuclear and extended families differ significantly in their socio-economic and demographic characteristics, the results show that husband’s salary, husband’s educational level, wife’s educational level, percentage of working women in the family and female’s average ages at marriage are higher among nuclear families than among extended families. The average number of children per a married woman is higher among extended families than among nuclear families. The results also indicate that nuclear families are more likely to live in an apartment and to rent their dwellings while extended families are more likely to live in villa and to own their dwellings. In addition, the results indicate that old, retired and crippled persons are more likely to be found in extended families than in nuclear families.
