URBAN STRUCTURE OF KUWAIT CITY IN THEKUWAITI WAQF SCRIPTS

The main purpose of this study is to interpret and analyze the waqf manuscripts in Kuwait from the view point of Urban Geography.

It examines six main issues, i.e.:

(a)              Definition of “waqf” and its targets.

(b)             The characteristics of “Waqf scripts”

(c)              Urban names and terms in Waqf scripts.

(d)             Names, which lead to define the compositions of urban structure of Kuwait town in Waqf scripts.

(e)              Distribution of activities, which define Kuwait town areas.

(f)               The total urban picture in the Waqf scripts of Kuwait.

The study also covers the urban sphere from 1789 – 1945, i.e. the period of the Waqf scripts.

Meanwhile, Kuwait Town has changed and many of its elements have disappeared, which makes this study important in the sense it explains small urbanization and urban forms at that time, in addition to other aspects.

Finally, the study ends up with a number of old new definitions, maps and analyzing a number of urban terms, which show elaborately the structure of Kuwait town before oil discovery.
