WORKER REMITTANCES FROM THE ARAB OILEXPORTING COUNTRIES AND POLICY OPTIONS

Auther : By: Dr. Mohammed El-Sakka

The aim of this paper is to investigate worker remittances from the Arab oil exporting countries and possible policy options to absorb these remittances by these countries.

A theoretical analysis of the nature of worker remittances and factors that determine the outflow of remittances from the host countries was presented. The outflow of money remittances from the oil exporting countries was estimated to be about 18.5 billion dollars in 1993.  Relative importance of remittances from these countries were calculated using various indicators such as remittances to GDP, exports, imports and international reserve ratios.  The study shows that these indicators reached critical levels in some countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman.  Possible policy options that these countries can adopt to maximize the domestic absorption of these remittances were proposed.
