POLITICAL CULTURE: THE CASE OF EMIRATES UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Auther : By: Dr. Abdul Khaleq and Amani Omran

The concept of political culture has been around in political science literature for the last 30 years.  Yet, its analytical and empirical application to the Arab World has been noticeably missing.  This study is probably to apply the concept of political culture to the case of the United Arab Emirates.  It essentially focuses on the political culture of the Emirates University Students. The study attempts to empirically examine several sets of questions dealing with political knowledge, political attitudes and orientations and national identity.  The study finds out that:

1. Emirates University Students’ political knowledge is surprisingly low.

2. Their overall orientation towards the political system is characteristically positive.

3. Their level of confidence in the governments’ internal and external policies is relatively high.

Finally, the study asserts the need for further empirical studies on political culture of other social groups in the United Arab Emirates.
