THE IMPORTANT RESOURCES OF OMAN’S MODERN HISTORY: A CRITICAL REVIEW

Auther : By: Dr. Abdl El-Kawy Fahmy Mohammed

Oman’s Modern History has wide varieties in its historical resources, which includes unpublished and published documents in both Arabic and foreign languages.  In addition to what the contemporary, Omani authors wrote and left as manuscripts and published afterwards, British Officials and the European Travelers wrote and published about Oman.  Since it is quite hard to study all of these resources in a single paper, we have selected the most important ones to be studied.

The result of this study shows that there are plenty of resources relating to Oman’s Modern History, concerning its political history, its relations with neighbouring and foreign powers, its maritime activities and foreign trade, the history of the ruling families and the internal revivals between the Imams and the Sultans.  The disturbances among the Tribes, which took religious features.  All of these resources served the views of their writers.

In spite of the plenty of resources relating to Oman’s Modern History, there is an insufficient data relating to its social and cultural Modern History, and the internal economic relations, such as the relations between the coastal tribes, which focused on maritime trade activities, and the internal tribes whose main interest was religious denomination.  There is still a shortage in data of this history, especially in the absence of Omani Documents.
