NATURE OF MEDICAL SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE IN HOSPITAL SETTING

Auther : By: Dr. Zakiah Al-Hashemi

This paper is about the nature of the role of the medical social worker in hospital setting, and the conditions under which this role has emerged.  The researcher discusses the differences between social work practice and membership of the worker in the medical team, and how the social worker has to successfully work on both levels.  The social worker intervenes to provide quality services to patients.  Meanwhile, the worker has a responsibility towards the medical team since it is part of membership to share and exchange information with members in the team.  Age and sex of the social worker are discussed here as well.  Both of them are important identifying information for practice.  The researcher emphasizes on training and preparing the social worker pre-practice period. It is essential to improve the role of the social worker on both micro and macro levels in hospital setting, especially with the fact that most of medical social work is practiced in hospitals.
