THE GEOGRAPHICAL DIMENSIONS OF CARDIOVASCULAR MORBIDITY AND RESULTANT MORTALITY IN KUWAIT “AN ANALYTICAL STUDY IN MEDICAL GEOGRAPHY”

Auther : Dr. Ghanem Sultan

This study shows the impact of geographical factors in emergence and cardiovascular diseases prevalence in Kuwait.  Starting with the physical factors, the study accentuated the role of climate going through human factors as nutritional habits, hypertension, cholesterol, obesity, smoking, meagerness of physical activities and stress, which are all urbanism resultants.

The most important results of the study could be summarized as follows:

-  The impacts of human geographical factors are more apparent and clearer than that of the physical factors in the emergence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kuwait.

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Kuwait.

-  Urbanism is responsible – to some extent – for the prevalence of the disease because of meagerness of physical efforts and depending on urban means in modern life.

Hawally health area monopolized more than 38% of cardiovascular diseases mortalities in Kuwait followed by capital health area (20.5%).

The study affirmed that most of the disease mortalities occurred in 56 – 75 year old people, those above 75 years of age.

Finally, some recommendations related to the results ended the study as an attempt to minimize the aggravation of this disease as geographical phenomena could be studied through Medical Geography.
