THE EFFECT OF TEACHING GEOGRAPHY BY USING THE COMPUTER ON THE ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTITUDES OF FIRST SECONDARY CLASS STUDENTS IN QATAR

Auther : Dr. Ibrahim Alfar , and Dr. Ghadnana Albinali

Computers have entered many institutions that affect students and their environment.  So, how can we prepare such students in associate that computers affect every side of it without preparing them systematically to meet such challenge?

Computer has been used for more than 30 years in teaching languages, mathematics, science, social studies etc. However, it is hardly used in the Arab world by any of these methods in the teaching-learning process.

Using computer is one of the means and methods that can provide a significant role in teaching social studies in general and geography in particular.  Many studies have been carried out aiming at identifying the effects of using computer in teaching and learning social studies in general and teaching the context of geography in particular.  These studies have proven that the students’ achievement and performance have widely improved.  Also, there has been significant improvement in the attitudes towards social subjects.

The current study aims at identifying the effect of teaching geography through using computer on the achievement and attitudes of first secondary class students in Qatar.

The geography textbook for the first secondary class was taught through using a special educational computer program (multimedia software)

 -   The importance of this research brings from the fact that it contributes in the qualification of geography teachers in particular and social studies teachers in general.  It provides a new kind of teaching and contributes in convincing teachers of the benefits of using computer in the learning – teaching process.

The current research aims at verifying the following two hypotheses:

 -  There are no statistical differences at the level of (0, 05) between the achievement means of the first secondary students who used computer in learning geography students (experimental group) and those of the students who did not use computer (test group) in accordance with the results of the achievement test used.

-   There is no statistical differences at the level of (0, 05) between the acquired growth of the attitudes of the first secondary students who used computer in learning geography (experimental group, and those of the students who did not use computer (test group) in accordance with the difference in the post and pre-application of the attitudes measurement used.

To achieve the research goals, the instruments required for collecting data have been prepared.  They include:

 -   Achievement test in a geography unit for the first secondary class.

 -   Measurement of attitudes towards geography.

 -   Educational computer programme (multimedia software) for the geography unit pertaining to the first secondary class in Qatar.

The study sample was chosen randomly.  It consisted of (126) first secondary students.  Then it was divided randomly into two groups (experimental group and control group).  The computer teachers at each school were trained to apply the computer programme.  The social studies teachers were also trained to apply the proper method of using computer in teaching the geography text concerned.  The measurement and attitudes were practically applied.  The text concerned was also taught in accordance with the timetable set by the Ministry of Education to the two groups.

The control group was taught according to the normal method.  However, the experimental group was taught through using that educational computer program.  After that, the achievement test was applied to the two groups after teaching the unit concerned.

The attitude measurement was also applied after the process.  The research data was then collected and analyzed statistically by the computer through the statistical package (spssLpct), fourth version (Norusis), 1995.

The research has led to the following findings:

1.  There are statistical differences at the level of (0,05) between the two groups in achievement according to the results of the achievement test used.  The difference is in favour of the experimental group.

 2.  There are statistical differences at the level of (0,05) between the acquired growths of attitudes for the first secondary students who used computer (control group) in accordance is in favour of the experimental group.

The research has provided some recommendations for future studies on future samples to identify the effect of the educational programme used.  It has also recommended that education colleges and teachers’ qualification institutes adopt such kind of teaching and learning as well as the qualification of teachers through using computer in the teaching – learning process.
