THE ARGUMENT OF WIND AND SAIL A DISCUSSION OF THE POEM OF AL-UTAIBI

Auther : Dr. Su’ad ‘Abd Al-Wahhab

Abdallah Al-Utaibi was an associate professor of Arabic department at Kuwait University.  He was also a poet.  Al-Utaibi composed a long poem or you could say an ode.  This was the last verse composed by him before his death.  The poem is called “Qal Al-Mu’anna” which means “The mindful or thoughtful said”.  Dr. Su’ad argued about the meanings of Al-Utaibi’s poem, which he composed when he was fifty years old.  Al-Utaibi lived in Kuwait long before the discovering of oil.  Life was different before oil and there have been significant changes.

Al-Utaibi’s poem is divided into three parts: First is the introduction.  Second is mostly about the old life in Kuwait.  The Third is comparative study between the old and modern Kuwait.  This poem is full of colloquial words, which indicated to the old Kuwait.  Beside new words which come with modernity.

The Wind and the Sail indicated of special system of art, surly dialectic is a part of the argument, a sort of quarrel and some kind of questions.  All this search for sharing point of view.

The title of the poem as a whole makes us to look over verses.  The poem is a long verse about Kuwait; therefore, the poet used many colloquial words, which are not familiar in the Arabic language.  So, it gave us description of Kuwait before and after oil.

The author is colleague of Abdullah Al-Utaibi for seven years and she was close to his mind, therefore, she tried to be neutral in her analysis.  She tried also to find any trace of death in his poem before he died.  This poem was published after Al-Utaibi’s death; therefore, it was the last verses, composed by him.  He derived his poem from his past experience when he was young boy, playing with his friends.

Al-Utaibi mentioned every aspect of the subject; surly he talked about his life.  He showed love for everyone in Kuwait at that time.  He chose one rhyme for the whole poem’s, also he chose one meter, therefore, he was smart and has an ability to compose more than two hundred verses in one meter and one rhyme that few poets could do it.

The author tried to analyses the whole poem to find how much Al-Utaibi was concerned about the old Kuwait, and his feeling towards the modern time, surly he was sorry for missing the old Kuwaiti customs which he lived with.  The author discovered the feeling and his sympathy.  Therefore, she called his analysis “The argument of wind” and said “Which means Al-Utaibi desire to go back to the past”.
