THE OIL SITUATION IN CENTRAL ASIA AND THE CAUCASUS: Reality and the Future and the Effects on the Gulf Cooperation Council States

Auther : Dr. Saleh Abdullah Al-Rajhi

The aim of this study is to examine, analyze and evaluate the oil situations in the former Republics of Soviet Central Asian and Caucasus Republics, particularly those states around the Caspian Sea (Azerbeijan, Khazakistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).

This paper raised a number of questions regarding oil, the outlook of these Republics and the effects on the Gulf Cooperation Council States, which depend highly for their revenue on oil. Such questions were: What is the Oil and Gas Reality in the Central Asian and Caucasus Republics? What are the real oil and gas reserves in these States? What is the ability of these States top produce oil on the commercial levels? What are the possible future negative effects that could face the Gulf Cooperation Council States as major oil producers? Are these Republics becoming important oil producers similar to the Gulf States? And finally, is there a real attempt by the U.S. and Western Countries to turn the Caspian Oil States into an Oil Strategic Region in order to reduce the importance of the Gulf Region or at least to create a twine pillars of the two regions?

The study did as much as possible answer these questions and other relevant ones by using the available sources, documents and data.
