CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATERGENERATED FROM SOME LIGHT INDUSTRIESAND METHODS OF TREATMENT

Auther : Dr. Mishal Abdullah Al-Mishan and Eng. Farahat Mahrus Ahmad

A comprehensive survey was conducted to assess the heavily polluted load of industrial wastewater generated from the light industries in Kuwait, including soft drinks, dairy product, meat packing, poultry, flour mills, cakes and biscuits, sesame processing, textile, tanning, alfalfa (protein) and fats, liquid/solid detergents, pharmaceuticals, paper, aluminium extrusion, electro-plating and paint (pigment) industries.

Chemical and statistical analyses were made on 120 wastewater samples collected from 24 industrial plants representing the above industries.  Among the physical and chemical parameters measured are waste volume, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, total hardness, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), oil and grease and heavy metals.

Generally, the Kuwaiti industrial wastewater is multicoloured and contains variable concentrations of acids, solvents, organic material, carbohydrates, fats, oil and grease, BOD, COD, suspended matter, dissolved solids and heavy metals.

Technologies used currently for treating the industrial wastewater in Kuwait were reviewed and assessed.  Also, the appropriate engineering technologies for the purification and reuse of this wastewater were recommended.

Marked differences were noticed between theoretical values obtained from the rapid assessment studies of World Health Organization (WHO) and results obtained from the real measurements made in the study, and thus emphasizing the importance of carrying out environmental impact assessment studies based on real field and experimental investigations.
