IMAM SAUD B. ABDUL-AZIZ’S AUTHORITY IN OMANAND THE ATTITUDE OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENTOF INDIA TOWARDS IT (1218-1226 / 1803-1811)

Auther : Dr. Awaidah B. Metaireek Al-Juhany

This study has two objectives, the first is to investigate the extent of the Saudi State’s authority in Oman during the reign of Imam Saud B. Abdul-Aziz, and the second is an attempt to explore the attitude of the British government of India towards that authority.

Before entering into discussion of these two objectives, the study is preluded by a brief survey of the conditions in Oman, the British government of India’s interest in the Arabian Gulf and the extension of the Saudi authority to Eastern Arabia at the end of the 18th century.  The main discussion focuses on the Imam Saud’s efforts to strengthen the Saudi authority in Northern Oman and Muscat since he came to power in 1218 / 1803, and how much he succeeded in that.  It also explores how the Saudi authority posed a threat to the interests of the British Government of India in Oman, and how that government reacted to the threat and how much successful that reaction was.

The study is concluded by the arrival of Ottoman – Egyptian campaign to Hijaz in 1226/1811, because the event had its effect on both: the Saudi authority in Oman and the British attitude towards it.
