The Iraqi – Kuwait Crisis: A historical perspective

Auther : Dr. Jamal Zakaria Qassim

This paper deals with the false Iraqi claims of historical rights in Kuwait.  It surveys briefly the origin of Kuwait and its relationship with Ottoman Iraq since 1534 when the Ottomans invaded Baghdad.  It deals with analyses of documents produced by Western political and commercial agencies in the Gulf as well as British documents and early travel accounts that show that Kuwait was an independent entity since the 16th century.  The paper deals with the different agreements between Kuwait and Britain vis-à-vis the agreement between Britain and the Ottoman Empire, especially the 1899 Protectorate Agreement between Kuwait and Britain.  It also discusses in detail the different articles of the 1913 Agreement between Britain and Turkey.  The Parties acknowledged that Kuwait constituted a Province, enjoying autonomy within the Ottoman Empire and had the right to add the word Kuwait to the Ottoman flag that it flew.  The paper also survey, the Iraqi Attempts from 1913 onward between forming a unit with Iraqi and annexing it.
