News Coverage of Wars and the American Media Coverage of Kuwait Liberation War

Auther : Abdulrahman H. Al-Enad

This paper discusses the issue of mass media coverage of wars in general and the coverage of the American media of the Gulf War.  It approaches the topic through a discussion of the often noticed similarity between the official position of the Unites states in international affairs and the positions of the American mass media.  Obstacles and difficulties of covering wars in general are also discussed.  Governments need the support of mass media all time and they need it most during war time.

The American mass media played a vital role during the Gulf crisis.  They helped in keeping the support of American public opinion until the war ended.  Some media people argued that the media lost the war with the military because journals accepted the rules which were inforced by the military.  Of these rules there were media pools, security reviews, and military escorts.  Despite criticism of restrictions on media content and on journalists movement, the paper argues that these rules helped both the military and media people.  It concludes that the case of Gulf War has proved the success of media pool system.
