BRITISH COUNCILOR IN KUWAIT 1934 – 1961

Auther : Mousa Ghadhban Al-Hatem

Since 1899 communications and counseling between Great Britain and Kuwait has not stopped, yet it became stronger after 1946 when Kuwait exported its first oil shipment. Afterwards, British interest in the region and in Kuwait in particular increased.

During the thirties Great Britain boosted its political influence seeking Kuwaiti rulers’ approval to a British role in overseeing the Gulf States finances, a matter that was rejected repeatedly. Kuwait believed that the 1899 Treaty did not give Great Britain any form of internal policy intervention including overseeing the state’s finances. Kuwait stayed firm in its rejection until its independence in 1961 when relationship with Great Britain took a different and stronger path.
