THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO PHOBIA AND TEST ANXIETY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE STATE OF KUWAIT

Auther : Freih Owayd El-Anzey

The study aims to reveal the relationship between the academic achievement on the one hand, the measure of phobia and text anxiety on the other hand. The sample of the study included 584 secondary school Kuwaiti students (male: 239 ; female: 345), whose ages ranged from 13 – 16. Several measures were used to examine the variables concerned such as phobia survey list, test anxiety scale and grade point average. The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences between males and females on the variables of phobia and grade point average. Having been divided into high achievers and low achievers were more anxious and more phobic in terms of test situation; male low achievers vs. male high achievers were not differentiated. In addition, there was significant negative relationship between grade point average, test anxiety and phobia among female participants. The sub-scales of phobia were significantly correlated with total score of the test anxiety scale. The factor analysis for phobia revealed eight factors among males and females respectively.
