KUWAIT-SAUDI ARABIAN NEUTRAL ZONE PARTITION AGREEMENT AND THE PARTITION OF ITS MARITIME BOUNDARIES

Auther : Jassim Mohammad Karam

This paper studies the issue of political boundaries between the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The boundaries between the two countries were demarcated according to the Aqueer Agreement in 1922. By this agreement, a Neutral Zone was created between the two states. In 1965, the two countries agreed to divide the Neutral Zone equally between them. However, due to disagreements between the two countries, the maritime boundary of the Neutral Zone was left without demarcation. This unsolved dispute came to an end in July 2000 that is when they signed an agreement that would demarcate the maritime boundaries of the divided Neutral Zone. This paper discusses the reasons for creating the Neutral Zone along with the need for dividing it. The paper also focuses on the maritime dispute and how it was solved. The historical method helped this study to reach its goals. Agreements, maps and other documents signed by the two countries have been examined in depth to elucidate the actual problem.
