DEPOSITS, LOANS AND CASUALITY; A STUDY OF BANK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY IN SAUDI ARABIA

Auther : By: Dr. Hamad S. Al-Bazai, and Dr. Abdul Rahman T. Al-Otaishan

This paper makes an initial attempt to study the nature of bank management strategies in Saudi Arabia. This objective is achieved by using the Granger Methodology to test the direction of casuality between bank deposits and loans within a two-variable system. The results reveal that the direction of casuality appears to be bi-directional, i.e. from deposits to loans with a feedback. They also, show that casuality conclusions are sensitive to the lag specification of the variables. The results imply that Saudi banks adopt integrated asset-liability management whereby funding decision either follows or is contemporary to the investment decision.
