NATURAL INCREASE AND ITS ROLE IN RESOLVING THE IMBALANCE -DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION IN QATAR

Auther : By: Dr. Nedham A. Kareem Al-Shaf’ea

It is known that high percentages of the population are non-nationals in the Gulf States.  For example, these are more than 70% in Kuwait, UAE and Qatar.

This paper attempts to answer the question, that to what extent can the Qataris’ natural increase close the wide gap between them and non-Qataris.

The paper shows that the present role is weak as the Qataris’ natural increase represents only 13% of the total annual increase in the country.  And this share will drop in the future, because of the quick social changes in the society leading to further reduction in fertilities and therefore, the balance population situation between national and non-nationals will worsen in the future.

It is imperative that there should be a population policy adopted by the government for achieving better results, through: a) encouraging Qataris to have more children, b) decreasing the growth rate of the non-Qataris and c) utilizing effectively the limited Qatari work force.

Finally, the paper presents three probability cases for the future population and suggests that the distribution will be reasonable, when Qataris represent almost 50% by the year 2010.
