THE EFFECT OF THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF INDUSTRIES ON REGIONAL DISPARITIES IN SAUDI ARABIA: A CASE STUDY OF SAUDI INDUSTRIES

Auther : By: Fayez I. Al Habib, Mohamed Abdel Rahman and Fadghoosh K. Al Muraiki

The aim of this paper is to study the extent of localization of industries on regional disparities as measured by job creation and urbanization in Saudi Arabia.  The study analyzes the basic component of the industrial sector emphasizing the role of industry in the national development process.  The spatial location of industry as measured by number of establishment and employment is analyzed for eleven major industries in the fourteen administrative regions.

The major finding of the study is the concentration of industries in the three major urban areas of the Kingdom, namely: Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.  This concentration of industries is due to the availability of resources, existence of adequate market size, as represented by high population density and the continuous government support programs.  The study recommends the extension of government support programs to promote more equitable spatial distribution of industries on the national space.  Emphasis needs to be directed towards agro-based industries in the north and southern regions.
