THE DESERT CARAVAN ROUTE BETWEEN ALEPPO AND BASRA AS DESCRIBED By MODERN EUROPEAN TRAVELLERS

Auther : By: Dr. Falah Hassan and Dr. Mustafa Abbas Jafar

This paper is a historical study of the Great desert Caravan Route (also known as the Desert Basra – Aleppo Route) in light of the information available in the European travel books when this route began to play an important role in the trade of the European companies with India and the Far East.   This study deals with the different aspects of this route especially the types of caravans that used it, the times of their journeys, their costs, stations and the financial regulations for using the route in addition to the taxes borne by merchants and travelers.  It also investigates the credit and banking requirements of such activities and the types of money used on this route.

The paper concludes that the desert route from Basra to Aleppo was highly organized in operating caravans and stations and that at both ends there were developed trade communities in both Basra and Aleppo.   These trade communities developed annual and seasonal caravan trips to meet the requirements of international trade and travelers from south East Asia and the Arabian Gulf and Europe.
