THE ROLE OF MEANS OF COMMUNICATIONS IN SPATIAL RELATIONS: A CASE STUDY OF KUWAIT

Auther : By: Dr. Fatma Al-Abdelrazzak

This study deals with the development of the different means of communication in Kuwait and the different factors that contributed to their progress.  The first service of these is the postal service, which started in Kuwait in 1775.  During the reign of Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah (1896-1915), the first post office was opened in 1904 and it was under the supervision of Indian Postal System.  In 1948, the government of Kuwait took over the responsibility of domestic services and opened the General Post Office at Safat Square.  Kuwaiti stamps were issued for the first in 1958 and included three types.

Telephone and telex services have witnessed similar developments since they were introduced in Kuwait in 1912.  The Ground Satellite complex was established at Umm Al-Aish in 1969.

This development is the result of the following factors:

 a.      The increase of population especially expatriates.

 b.     The development of economic activities in Kuwait.

 c.     The expansion of the urban area and the needs for means of communication.

 d.     The expansion of Kuwait’s relations with other countries.
