THE GULF WAR: A STUDY IN ITS CAUSES AND IMPACTS

Auther : By: Mohammed I. Al-Hulwah

This study examines the Iraqi-Iranian conflict which came to be known as “The Gulf War”.  The approach used in this study is both historical and analytical.  The historical part is concerned with the development of Iraqi-Iranian conflict since the early years of the present century.  On the other hand, the analytical approach is used to examine the other causes of the conflict such as ideology, nationalism and religious doctrines.  The findings of the study can be summarized as follows:

 1.     The roots of Iraqi-Iranian war go back to the conflict over the southern boundaries between the two countries.

 2.     Although the boundary question is considered to be the most important factor of the war, nevertheless, it is not the only one.  There are other important factors, which cannot be ignored such as nationalism, ideology and the different religious doctrines.

 3.     Socially, the Gulf war has left its impact on both Iraq and Iran.  The war forced the two countries to change their political attitudes and to modify their economic plans.

 4.     The most outstanding characteristic of the war is its huge cost.  It is estimated at the end of 1987 to be 571 Billion US$.
