ESTIMATING THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF ALTERNATIVE WATER USES IN AL-QASSIM

Auther : By: Dr. Gallal El Mallah and Dr. Nasr El-Kazaz

This study is an attempt to introduce water as a production factor and compute its importance in alternative uses in agriculture in Al Qassim region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  Because of the lack of information and date neither the marginal approach nor the linear programming approach could be used to evaluate water as a production factor in its different uses.  The idea here, therefore, is to examine the physical productivity for water, i.e. the amount of production per unit of water in its different uses.  Winter and summer crop patterns were first examined and their water requirements were calculated.  Crops were ranked according to the above criterion.  The results show that wheat is considered the most efficient crop among all cereals regarding the physical production per unit of water used.  On the other hand, onion shows to have priority among winter vegetables.  The effect of changing the crop pattern on water consumption was discussed but fixed figures about the optimal crop pattern could not be determined at this stage.  A further study dealing with the economic benefits from water alternative uses is required to make use of this study.
