The aim of this research is to study the relationship between the attitudes of the parents of the first year children at Kuwaiti elementary schools and some environmental variables. The variables are the cultural background and the level of education of the parents, the size of the family, the nature of supervising the homework and the level of the pupil’s performance in the subject of Modern Mathematics.
The paper hopes to provide educations supervisors with beneficial information about the parents in Kuwait and their relationship with the school curriculum in general and the Modern Mathematics subject, in particular, since this subject was greatly developed during the last decade.
It is also hoped that the research will answer the questions about the relationship between the mentioned variables and the Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti parents. The answers will, hopefully, cast more light on this area so as to help the decision maker. Educationist understands the atmosphere surrounding teaching mathematics in the elementary school. This will lead to more developments and amendments in the area of mathematical concepts and presentation.
The problem:
The research deals with an important problem, which is the future of the child at school through investigating the teaching of Modern Mathematics. It attempts to answer the following questions:
1. What is the relationship between the parental attitude towards Modern Mathematics and the variables surrounding the elementary first year child? These variables are: the level of educations of the parents, the size of the family, the nature of supervising the homework and the child’s achievement scores in Modern Mathematics.
2. What is the nature of the variable, which might be spotted between the parents in different Kuwaiti areas with regard to Modern Mathematics in the first elementary year?
3. What is the nature of the variable in the attitudes of Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis toward the same?
4. What is the size of the variable, which might interpret the achievement of the child in Modern Mathematics through using the parental attitude, variable towards Modern Mathematics and the other variables (level of parents, educations, size of family and nature of supervising homework)?
