THE IRANIAN OCCUPATION OF THE ARAB LANDS IN THE GULF: A STUDY IN THE HISTORY OF ARAB-IRANIAN RELATIONSHIPS: 1887-1971

Auther : By: Dr. Abdul Malik Al-Temimi

The Iranian occupation of the three Arab Islands in the Gulf (Abu Mussa and the two islands of Tanb) interprets an important side of Arab-Iranian relations.  This occupation did not take place suddenly but was preceded by several Iranian attempts since the beginning of the twentieth century.  During British presence in the area, Iran had already occupied the two Arab islands of Siri and Hingam.  Britain had its own strategic and economic interests in the area and tried to maintain good relations with Iran at a time when the later had disputes with the Gulf Arab States over land and sea borders.

This study deals with the historical issue of the Iranian occupation of the Arab islands in the Gulf in order to understand the historical origin and nature of the Arab-Iranian relations in the twentieth century and the position of the British imperialism in the region.  The study also deals with the economic and strategic importance of the islands and gives a future perspective of Arab-Iranian relations on a basis of the return of the islands to their legal owners, non-aggression and the peaceful solution of problems in the interest of both parties.
