GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF VEGETABLE CULTIVATION IN IRAQ

Auther : By. Dr. Abbas F. Al-Sa’adi

The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors, which may explain the differentiations in the areas allocated to cultivating the major kinds of vegetables in Iraq.  These vegetables according to the data of 1985 and its standardized scores are: water melon, tomato, cucumber and broad beans.

This paper shows that there are four principal regions for cultivating such products:

 1.     The first is concentrated in governorates of Salah Al-Deen and Wassit.  It occupies more than fifth of the total vegetable area cultivated in Iraq.

 2.     The second has the standardized score degree of 0.5 to 1.49.  It occupies an area almost as double of that allocated to the previous region in the northern and the middle part of the country.

 3.     The third region with the standardized score ranging from -0.40 to +0.49 degree.  The main crops here include a comparatively wider range than the first one.  Its geographical distributions almost dispersed in shape.

 4.     The fourth region presents a standardized score degree ranging from -0.5 to less than that.  The percentage of the land allocated to this region when compared to the area allocated for cultivating the main vegetable is not more than 15% of the gross area cultivated by vegetables in Iraq.  Most of it is concentrated in the southern and southwestern part of the country.
