THE CONSTRUCTION OF STANDARDIZED TEST IN MATHEMATICS FOR FIRST GRADE PUPILS IN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS IN KUWAIT

       This research aims at the construction of standardized diagnostic test in mathematics for first grade pupils in intermediate schools in the State of Kuwait.

       The test deals with natural numbers and operations on them according to the unified and developed mathematics curriculum, elementary schools of the Gulf Arab States.

       The population of this research was all the first grade intermediate school pupils in the State of Kuwait during the academic year 1989/1990.  From this population 1775 pupils were taken as a representative sample.

      Content validation is the method used to judge that the test measures what it is desired top measure.

       The test consists of 314 items and is divided in three parts with 94 items, 114 items and 106 items respectively.

       Item analysis showed the following results:

1.  Facility coefficients ranged between 0.30 and 0.89 with a mean facility coefficient of 0.68.

2.  Discrimination coefficients ranged between 0.15 and 0.94 with a mean discrimination coefficient of 0.54.

3.  Mean of the rest scores is 191.67.

4.  Standard deviation of the test scores is 18.12.

5.  Reliability coefficient of the test is 0.81.

6.  Standard error of measurement of the test is 7.9.

         It can be noticed that the results concerning facility level discrimination power and reliability of the test are statistically acceptable.
