TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE IN THE BAHRAINI VILLAGE

Auther : Dr. Baqer Salman Al-Najjar

This study tends to view and discuss the effect of technology on the Bahraini rural section.  When dealing with technology we include the contemporary models of up-building among which the Gulf towns of very recent existence are of the most prominent examples.

Modern building-up has been instrumental in new production and consumer technologies; furthermore, it has induced fundamental as well as superficial changes.  In spite of obvious material changes, essential social reasons defined by the pervasive value system are still active in the society of today.  The role of a woman and her network of relations as well as power distribution within the village social structure, exemplify the persistent pattern of traditional relations.  While there have been some changes in the role of women, in so far as their education and contribution to the workforce, nevertheless they are still bound by a traditional value system with codified laws.  From another angle, technology and the encroachment of the city onto the village during these processes of change have brought changes in the weaving of power and the hierarchical structure of the village.  This change has had significant influence of the re-emergence of the important role of the family and the various religious institutions such as the Mosque and the Ma’tam.
