NEW ASPECTS IN THE YEMENI UNITY: A STUDY IN THE FACTORS AND THE PROBLEMS OF THE YEMENI UNITY

Auther : Dr. Mohammed I. Al-Hulwah

The emergence of the Yemeni unity in May 1990 is considered one of the most important political developments in the Arabian Peninsula in recent years.  It represents the third unity attempt in the Arabian Peninsula after the unification of Saudi Arabia in September 1932 and the formation of the United Arab Emirates in December 1971.

This study reviews the historical background of the Yemeni unity under the Imamic and republican rule.  It also examines the factors which have influenced the formation of the Yemeni unity.  Among those factors are: The 1986 events in the South Yemen, the introduction of Perestroika in the Soviet Union and its impact on the South Yemen politics, prevailing peace in the relation between North and South Yemen and the political openness of the North Yemeni government.

The above mentioned factors have been encountered with problems which have encircled the Yemeni unity and may limit its progress.  Among those problems are: The economic difficulties which face the Yemen Arab Republic at present, the lack of security in the cities and the suburbs and the political inflation which has limited the effectiveness of the government and non-government institutions.

The study concludes that the Yemeni unity will survive but will face difficult challenges, which may delay the process of unification.
