THE DEVELOPMENT OF POPULATION COMPOSITION IN KUWAIT AND ITS AREA OF BALANCE BETWEEN 1965 AND 1985
Auther : Dr. Mohamed Ali-Al-Ramadan
The study investigates population composition imbalance in Kuwait since 1965. Balancing the population composition has been a strategic objective since 1985. The goal is to reach equal percent distribution for both Kuwaitis and expatriates before the year 2000.
Utilizing census and civil registration data, the study analyzes the development of population composition in Kuwait over the period 1965 – 1989. The main part of the study covers historical background of population growth, population composition, imbalance, characteristics of the imbalance in the composition and potentials for balance. Finally, aspects of population policies since 1965 are analyzed based on policies derived from national developmental plans in Kuwait. A new perspective on the future of solving this problem is addressed.
The study concludes that population composition balance can be attained in Kuwait by controlling migration rate. However, increasing the Kuwaiti population through natural means to produce a balance in population composition is not realistic. There is a need for producing improvement in the age structure of the Kuwaiti population through controlling fertility. Generating demographic policies would be irrelevant if they do not go hand in hand with implementation plans, which are essential for achieving national goals and strategies.
