THE IMPACT OF THE IRAQI INVASION ON BEHAVIORAL, EMOTIONAL AND COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF KUWAIT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

         The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the Iraqi invasion on behavioral, emotional and cognitive aspects of the students at Kuwait University.  The sample consisted of 1122 students of both sexes representing all University Colleges, and was subjected to a questionnaire comprising 45 items designed to reflect opinions in the three major areas of the study.

 The following results were obtained:

1.  As for the effect on behavioral aspects, results indicate the existence of some behavioral problems such as nervousness, startle reactions, aggressiveness, violating laws, procrastination, reckless driving, self neglect, heavy smoking, sleep disturbance and use of arms.

 2.  As for the impact on emotional aspects, results show the existence of some emotional problems such as general anxiety, general mistrust, anger, frustration, sensitivity, boredom, daydreaming and grief.

 3.  As for the impact on cognitive aspects, results indicated the existence of some cognitive problems such as loss of memory, loss of concentration, fantasizing, forgetting and inability to think.

 4. Significant results were obtained between groups concerning the place of stay during the invasion, no significant differences were shown concerning sex or major, when behavioral aspects were discussed.

 5. Significant results were also shown for sex and place of stay, when emotional aspects were discussed, while no significant differences were shown concerning major.

 6. As for the cognitive aspects, significant differences were obtained between groups concerning sex, major and place of stay.

         Some recommendations were drawn as guidelines for necessitating counseling services to be provided for university students to overcome the problem.
