ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF SAUDI ARABIAN NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES INPROMOTING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Auther : Dr. Ismail M. Mandany,Dr. Hamdy H. Mahmood and Rashid Al-Rushood

The present investigation has been conducted with the objective of assessing the role of Saudi newspapers and magazines in creating public awareness of and concern with environmental issues and obtaining the perception and attitudes of the newspaper’s and magazine’s personnel towards the coverage of environmental issues.  A content analysis of three newspapers and magazines published in various areas in Saudi Arabia during the year 1988 was undertaken.

The analysis of the newspapers and magazines content as well as personnel perception and attitudes produced the following general conclusions:

  -  It appears that Saudi newspapers and magazines do no play a significant role in creating the promoting mass awareness of various environmental issues.

 -  Saudi newspapers and magazines have focused on environmental pollution issues but have neglected other local environmental problems such as desertification.

 -  Lack of original in-depth investigator coverage of environmental issues, which strongly suggests that the press has reported news and reacted to it rather than initiating concern for environmental problems.

-  The scientific and technical content of the articles that appeared in Saudi press was generally poor, due to the lack of the use of high quality and reliable sources such as environmental scientists and scientific reports.

-  The absence of a section or a personal dedication to deal with environmental issues indicates that Saudi press does not pay much attention to environmental problems.

 -  The lack of clear objectives, policies and planning of environmental issues creates confusion among press personnel, which is reflected in their opinion and treatment of environmental issues.
