LEVELS OF NATURAL INCREASE AND TRENDS OF POPULATION GROWTH IN KUWAIT

Auther : Dr. Amal Y. A. Al-Sabah

In the present paper, we study the levels, trends and differentials of natural increase in Kuwait.  The data used in analysis are mainly from population censuses, vital statistics and other related sources.

In the first section, we discuss the net effects of births and deaths of natural increase through a detailed analysis of some fertility and mortality rates from the available data.  The definitions of these rates are consistent with conventional demographic usage.

The paper outlines the importance of natural increase as a major factor determining the population’s growth process in Kuwait.  For Kuwaiti population, the analysis shows that the natural increase is the most influential factor associated with high births and low deaths.  For non-Kuwaitis, the rapid population growth during the period is attributed to the role of migration rather than to changes in natural increase.

The following data summarizes some selected demographic indices discussed in the paper.

With the exception of crude death rate, which changed very little during the period , other rates display a trend of declining.  A great many variables representing socio-economic characteristics have been shown to be associated with this trend.
