MARINE POLLUTION IN BAHRAIN AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Auther : By: Mr. A. Jalil Zainal and Dr. Ismail M. Madany

This study was carried out to assess the major sources of marine pollution in the State of Bahrain, identify their main impacts on the marine environment and set future guidelines for proper control.

The rapid assessment methodology recommended by who was employed in the study to quantify the total pollutant’s loading discharged into the marine environment.  This was combined with actual effluent analysis reports, obtained on-site for industrial sources to make the final data analysis.

It was found that 50% of the total BODs loading had originated from the Agro-industry.  The amount of organic waste generated from this sector in terms of BOD was found to exceed that of the domestic effluents by a factor of 2.

In the case of oil pollution, oil tankers contributed over 80% of the oils reaching the sea in 1984, as a result of discharging their dirty ballast.  On the industrial side, based on total loadings the refinery appeared to be the most significant source of BODs and oil pollution, introducing roughly 19% of the first and 17% of the later into the sea.
