TASKS OF SCHOOL MEDIA SPECIALISTSAND ITS RELATIONS WITH PHYSICAL FACILITIES

         The main purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the school media specialists perform their tasks, the extent of the availability of physical facilities at schools and how media are acquired.  The researchers prepared a questionnaire consisted of twenty-eight (28) items related to two major areas: Task of school media specialists (12 items) and availability of physical facilities (18 items).  The instrument was validated and proved to be reliable.

         Data were collected from (63) school media specialists.  The results of the statistical analyses revealed that the school media specialists did not perform their tasks as well as expected.  However, few tasks were performed more frequently than others.  For example, equipment operation and helping teachers to design and produce their own material were performed more than training teachers to operate equipment and participating in preparing the school budget concerning media. Other findings were that, preview rooms were available in most of schools, but classes were not well equipped with curtains and screens.  Media library was scarcely available in school, which mainly get media through the main administration of the educational media as the results revealed.  There were correlations between few physical facilities and certain tasks of school media specialists.

        The researchers recommended that school media specialists should attend in-service workshops and more interactions between teachers and media specialists should take place.

        In order to bring about more effective instruction, classes should be well prepared for the use of media effectively, and other resources for media such as cooperative societies should participate in providing schools with certain media.  Other similar research may be conducted at other levels of the educational system.
