THE PROBLEMS OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN QATAR

Auther : By: Dr. Bassam H. Al-Nassedr

Qatar has adopted a policy of diversifying its income by investing the oil revenues, the main source of national income in other economic sectors.  Except for the agricultural sector which shares only about 0.9% of the total national income, other sectors are prospering at a relatively high rate, of agriculture is relatively slow.

This study is an attempt to find out the reasons affecting the slow rate of agricultural development.  It examines the physical and socio-economic factors, which affect agricultural development in Qatar.  These two groups of factors are analyzed in detail in order to evaluate their impact on agricultural development at present and in the future.

Results of this study show that the physical factors within certain limits are suitable for exploitation; however, they require high standards of accuracy and experience to be exploited well.  These results show also that the socio-economic factors are not as developed as the physical factors. These problems and difficulties show the need for careful planning and sound programmes.

The study presents some relevant recommendations and solutions which aim to overcome the impact of these problems and difficulties.
