NATIONAL INCREASE AND ITS ROLE IN THE POPULATION GROWTH OF KUWAIT (1975 – 1980)

Auther : By: Dr. Makki M. Aziz

This study deals with population growth in Kuwait.  It analyzes:

·        The regional differentiation of natural increase and both of its two components: births and deaths.

·        The relative contribution of natural increases to growth of total population, Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaitis.

·        The relative contribution of immigration to population growth of residential districts compared with that of natural increase.

·        The consequences of varied effects of immigration and natural increase.

The population of Kuwait witnessed a high rate of increase over the last few decades.  This was due to both high rates of natural increase (3.7%) and the flow of immigration (5.3%) during the intercensal period from 1975 – 1980.  The study shows that immigration is the major factor of non-Kuwaitis growth, compared with the natural increase, which is the principal cause of growth among Kuwaitis.

The conclusions of the study are the following:

·        The relative contribution of natural increase varies not only from place to place in Kuwait, but also in the same place over a certain period of time.

·        The high levels of increase in Kuwait especially among nationals compared with non-Kuwaitis.

·        Death rates fall faster than birth rates causing rapid population growth, a fall in birth rates and slower decline in death rates means a well-balanced growth of population in the future.
