DESERTIFICATION IN KUWAIT

Auther : Dr. Subhi Al-Mutawa

Desertification is an environmental expression, which came into existence at the end of the seventies.  About 15% of the world’s population lives in arid and semi-arid areas.  These countries, as well as Kuwait, which is located in an arid zone, face the danger of desertification unless measures are taken to control this process.

This study was designed to research the causes of desertification in the agricultural and range lands of Kuwait.  Soil and water samples were taken from ten different farms located at Wafra and Abdaly.  Soil samples were taken from three different depths, which were 0.0cm, 30cm and 60cm.  The analysis showed that the salinity increased with depth and especially when the hard-pan was near the surface.  It also showed that soil electrical conductivity of new farms are far less than old farms.  It ranges from 0.6 to 10 milli moze/cm.  This indicates that excessive irrigation will increase the salt content in the soil.

Water samples that were taken from the study farms contained a very high salt content.  It shows that the level of water in the wells has decreased, while the salt content has increased to about 10000 p.p.m.  The presence of a high salt content in the water and in the soil is considered one of the major causes for desertification in farm lands.

A study of plants in the biosphere reserve at different locations was also included.  It showed that over-grazing coupled with high animal density on range land created an environmental disequilibrium.  This factor of over-grazing plus high temperature, high evaporation rate, off-road vehicles, high density camping and flood irrigation contributed to desertification in Kuwait.

A strong preventive measure is suggested to overcome the desertification of the agriculture and range land in Kuwait.
