AIR POLLUTION IN SAUDI CITIES

Auther : By: Dr. Fathy Musselhy

This study is concerned with air pollution in three of the biggest cities in Saudi Arabia, chosen on the basis of the existence of huge industrial bases and automatic means of transportation.  The study includes the analysis of levels of contamination, composition of pollutants, factors of contamination and their distribution in the different area of each city.  Although levels of contamination have not reached a dangerous level, the rapid industrial development in Saudi Arabia and the dense use of automatic vehicles will cause such a situation.

To avoid dangerous contamination levels, some proposals are made in this study:

 A)              Industries in heavily populated areas should be redistributed in other places.  Better positions should be chosen depending on direction of the wind, distance from green areas, size of population, and etc.  Possible aggregation of occupational and light industries is also recommended.

 B)               Vehicles used should be more organized and the level of pollution emission must be controlled.  Car pools and regular inspection of cars are recommended.

 C)               Plans should also include afforestation and constructing griddles of dry trees around main cities.
