THE ARABS OF HADRAMAWT IN HYDERABAD

Auther : By: Omar Al-Khaldy

Hadramawt was the name given by the Kathiri and Qu’aiti Sultanates in Southern Arabia before 1968. After that date, it was used to refer to the Shabwa and Hadramawt Emirates in the Peoples Democratic Republic of South Yemen.

The people of Hadramawt are among the most civilized people of south Arabia. They had a long impressive history as one of basic centers of religious studies in the area. The city of Tarim is one of the notable examples of south religious centers being the centre of many distinguished scholars and Sufis.

The people of Hadramawt emigrated a long time ago to many Arab and African countries as well as countries of South-East Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore where they were engaged in commerce and different aspects of education. In the middle ages, they also immigrated to the western coast of India especially the Maratha, Gujarat and the Deccan states. This paper, however, deals with their migration to Hyderabad in the modern times. There they kept their Arabic language and assumed leading positions in commercial, political and educational fields. They enjoyed a high status in the councils of the Bahmani Kingdom and the succeeding states that dominated the scene from 1300 to 1686 A.D.

Some of them were also soldiers during that period. The Qu’aiti State benefited a great deal from the strong relations that were established between Hadramawt and Hyderabad. However, those close relations diminished because of the influence of the political developments that finally led to the annexation of Hyderabad by India.
