THE FOREIGN CHALLENGES THAT FACE THE SAFAVIDS

Auther : By: Prof. Bader Eddin Al-Khussussi

The Safavid dynasty was one of the most important rulers of Iran throughout its long history. It united the country which was torn apart by ethnic, religious and sectarian strives.

The origin of the forerunner of the dynasty, Sheikh Safiyy Al-Din is somewhat obscure; however, he was widely popular because of his sanctity. His descendant, Shah Ismail, established the dynasty, unified Iran and imposed on it the Shi’ite version of Islam, which presented a dangerous challenge to the Ottoman dynasty, which was the champion of the fundamentalist (Sunni) version of Islam. Consequently, the clash between the two dynasties shaped the political and religious map of the Middle East for two centuries.

The Safavids also got into contact with the European powers interested in the Arabian Gulf, especially the Portuguese and the British. These contacts wavered according to circumstances and were connected with both the balance of powers in area and the antagonism that existed between the Safavids and Ottomans.
