A STUDY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOURCES IN THE ARABIAN GULF

Auther : Dr. Reda Jawad Al-Hashimy

Recent archaeological excavations have proved beyond any doubt the importance of the Arabian Gulf in the sequence of ancient civilizations in the near East.  The massive accumulation of archaeological relics which were unearthed in recent years have provided historians with documented evidences and sources which have enabled them to sketch a complete record of historical developments in the gulf region.  The efforts made in deciphering the ancient inscriptions and analyzing the archaeological findings is expounded in this paper.  Not only have material finds helped in fixing the successive phases of the settlement’s life in the region, but they have also revealed the unsuspected existence of urban cultures with strong spatial relations with the outside world.

Despite the fact that the very early history of the Arabian Gulf is still largely conjectural, yet there is far more to be revealed through the examination of documentary materials which may be dealt with in a forthcoming study.
