IRAQ’S CONFRONTATION TO PERSIAN EXPANSION (1733 – 1743)

Auther : E. A. Al-Gawahiry

The decade extending between (1733 – 1743) was one of political unrest and turmoil in the history of the Orient in general.  This has been markedly aggravated by the conflict between the Persians and the Ottomans, which lasted for a considerable lapse of time.

This paper stressed the fact that the Persian-Ottoman conflict was in its essence a conflict over the Control of Iraq.  An attempt is made to place the Persian expansion in Iraq in its proper political perspective. The historical scope of the circumstances, which accompanied the various incursions of Persia inside Iraq, revealed the following succession of events:

a)     The instigation of national awareness among the Iraqis to mobilize their efforts in facing foreign aggression.

b)    The flaring up of sentiments of national consciousness and the zeal for independence has both contributed to the political unification of the different factions against the Persian invaders.

c)     Collective national efforts led to the complete failure of the Persian invaders to attain their objectives.

 d)    Several attempts were made to impede Iraqi efforts in putting an end to foreign domination in their country either Persian or Ottoman.

This succession of historical events during the crucial decade extending between 1733 - 1743 proves beyond any doubt that the Persian aggression during this period was not an exception but was one of a repeated nature, a fact which reveals a trend in the foreign policy of Persian Sovereigns.
